Not sure about you, but going to the dentist isn’t included in my top 5 favorite things. Sometimes there is pain involved and the cosmetic things that I truly care about aren’t covered in my check-up copay. I have had a long relationship with dental offices. I had braces, spacers, expanders… all of the things starting at a young age. While I still kick myself for not continuing to wear my retainer, my teeth have remained fairly straight. When I smile at people I doubt they are thinking about how many cavities I have or what my flossing routine is. First impression is usually how white and bright your smile is. Unfortunately time has not been kind to these pearly off-whites. I love my morning coffee, sweets get me through and let’s be honest, sometimes you have to stop and smell the rosé. A crazy teeth staining trio indeed.
The one procedure I haven’t had at the dentist is a teeth whitening treatment. The expense is probably the largest factor. There is also the inconvenience of going to the dentist, the sitting still and don’t forget the upkeep. Smile Brilliant is the answer I’ve been waiting for! A professional teeth whitening experience that is completely customized for you to use at home. By customized, I mean the trays are made specifically for your teeth and the system is developed for your unique tooth sensitivity.
When I was asked by Smile Brilliant to try their teeth whitening system, at first I thought I won the dental lottery. It’s funny how timing works because I just got back from the dentist and was considering my teeth whitening options. New year, new me right? While I wanted to scream “yes” right away, I was a bit apprehensive. I, like many other working mothers have a full plate. Early mornings, getting my 3-year-old and husband in order, daycare drop offs, busy work schedule, daycare pick ups, making dinner, organizing our calendars, it’s never-ending. How do I find the time? One thing I’ve learned in this life is sometimes you have to do some things for yourself. Treatjazself if you will… so I said, “yes” and was immediately happy with my decision.
There are few things I love more than process and my goodness was I impressed with how smoothly this went.
The Process:
- I provided my contact information and answered a series of questions, from whether I’ve had dental work done before, to my experience with tooth sensitivity, etc.
- Then boom a few days later I received my T6 Sensitive System. This is the system for average stained teeth.
- I was given clear step by step directions to create my custom molds.
- Smile Brilliant provided a padded envelope, with postage included to send back my molds. From there I prayed I did it right, if I didn’t they would have sent more impression material for a second take. Luckily it was a success.
- Once my custom teeth whitening trays arrived, I was shocked that they fit so perfectly. The trays covered each tooth, not just the front which was my silly assumption.
- I followed the directions, wearing my trays (with teeth whitening solution) for 45 minutes to 2 hours, while living my daily life… I worked, played with my son and while my speech wasn’t the exact same, I could still read bedtime stories.
While these are activities I typically do on a daily basis, these are things I wouldn’t be able to do had I spent this amount of time at the dentist. I was still able to live a regular life and the whitening was an added bonus. I ran errands, watched TV, cooked dinner, it’s funny how you don’t even realize you are multitasking.
Pros: For best results, Smile Brilliant advises to do your treatment at the end of the day so no additional food or drink have the ability to stain your teeth. Going through this process has really helped me to stop snacking at night. I wanted to keep these teeth as white as possible, so I passed on a bite of chocolate or a swig of wine. Secondly, the average price for a teeth whitening treatment at the dentist is around $750. You can’t beat the price of $145-$175.
Cons: I realize now that I have extremely sensitive teeth, but I wasn’t aware how sensitive your teeth are while whitening. I thought I could go on every day or every other day with the treatment, but one tooth in particular wasn’t having it. I took a slight break and moved to 2 or 3 days in between the treatments and made sure to follow-up with the Desensitizing gel and had no had further issues. They say as long as the treatments remain consistent you should still get the optimal results. Another thing would be, one teeth whitening gel syringe can be used for 3-4 treatments. It would be helpful if there were lines showing how many units you were applying to each tray so you do not overuse per session. I suppose that would make it look more like a medical syringe, but it would be beneficial to me.
Honestly, I can’t thank Smile Brilliant enough for this experience. I was already a very smiley person, but now I might be borderline creepy with how often I’m smiling. Thanks for my bright and much whiter smile in 2019.
